Tip of the Month

Make Meetings Count

Office meetings can be such a regular occurrence for a work day that they may seem like a waste of time. However, some meetings can have an important purpose and require more attention. Although some meetings may seem like they really suck, each meeting has a goal and may improve your business.

Here are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind for future meetings:

DO

  • Come prepared with ideas
  • Do more listening than talking
  • Pay attention to the presenter
  • Take notes
  • Turn off (or silence) your electronic devices
  • Arrive on time
  • Dress to impress

DON'T

  • Don’t check your electronics
  • Don’t have side conversations
  • Don’t interrupt the presenter
  • Don’t get frustrated if you feel like you aren’t being heard
  • Don’t leave trash or borrowed chairs behind
  • Don’t zone out

Many times these do’s and don’ts are not followed by everyone who attends meetings. One way to keep track of important do’s and don’ts is by rating your meetings with This Meeting Sucks! You will be able to see reasons why the meetings suck and reasons why meetings rock. Those reasons can easily be translated into do’s and don’ts for future meetings. The more people from your organization that rate meetings, the more accurate your organization’s ratings will be!
